DECEMBER 2003

At the Building Trades Employers' Association Trade Show, November 25, 2003, Mr. Richard Mendelson, OSHA's NY Area Director, presented data of considerable interest.

Of note: Of the 14 fatalities that occurred last year (in the Manhattan area office), a significant percentage occurred on a Friday during the month of December.

Please pay special attention to this statistic and let's stop the trend. Make every effort possible to be proactive. Our wish is for you to be safe with your family this holiday season.

OSHA LEGISLATIVE UPDATE DOWNLOAD

The revised OSHA Form 300, Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses is now available. The forms, which are required for employers to use in recording injuries and illnesses, have changed in several important ways for 2004. Foremost among the changes is the addition of an occupational hearing loss column. Other changes include:

  • "days away from work" column now comes before the days "on job transfer or restriction"
  • more clear formulas for calculating incidence rates
  • new recording criteria for occupational hearing loss in the "Overview" section
  • more prominent column heading "Classify the Case" to make it clear that employers should mark only one selection among the four columns offered.

These changes were made in response to public suggestions on making the forms easier to use.

Employers must begin to use the new OSHA Form 300 on January 1, 2004. Injuries and illnesses for years prior to 2004 should continue to be recorded on the appropriate form for that year.

TSC, Total Safety Consulting is Providing Safety Training to Select Parsons School of Design Architecture Students

Under the auspices of "Take the Field," TSC, Total Safety Consulting has included a select group of Parsons School of Design Architecture Students in the safety initiatives being coordinated by TSC at the Grand Street Academy location. "Take the Field" is a non-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding public school athletic facilities in NYC.

At Grand Street Academy, TSC provides safety auditing and loss control services at the site on behalf of TDX Construction, one of the "Take the Field" construction partners. Recognizing the critical need for all those on site to work in a safe environment, TSC has incorporated the Parsons students into the safety initiatives underway including safety orientations and weekly safety meetings on personal protection equipment and other issues.

The Design Workshop, a required studio program for second-year graduate students of Architecture at Parsons, allows students to take on corporate and industry partnerships, giving them real world work experience while allowing them to give back to their community. The Design Workshop students have volunteered to help in the design and construction of the field house and press box during the rebuilding of over 45 athletic facilities throughout the five boroughs.

"It is unique for safety management to be introduced at this level of education. Too often the curriculum for students of architecture and engineering does not incorporate or introduce safety management into the learning process," noted James C. Bifulco, CSP, Managing Safety and Loss Control Consultant for TSC.

TSC is a leading provider of safety management and loss control consulting services in the tri-state area. Since its inception, TSC has trained more than 6,000 individuals and companies in construction safety training.TSC is conducting safety auditing to nine "Take the Field" locations on behalf of TDX.
